Does your home need more insulation? Are you not sure? Many homeowners aren’t, and that’s where professional insulation companies can help.

Some older homes don’t meet the U.S. Department of Energy’s latest insulation recommendations. You may need to re-insulate if your home was built in the 1970s or before (though this isn’t always the case, so be sure to talk to professionals). The age of your home isn’t the only way to tell if you need to re-insulate, however.
Signs You Need to Re-Insulate
Other signs, besides the age of your home, that may indicate it’s time to re-insulate are:
- Energy bills that are higher than usual for seemingly no reason (check them in comparison to how they were at the same time last year—there might be a problem if they are significantly higher)
- Drafty, uncomfortable rooms or uneven temperatures throughout the house (this could indicate that you don’t have enough insulation in your walls)
- Air conditioner or furnace running more than usual (if your home isn’t properly insulated, more heat can leak in during the summer and out in the winter, which can cause your AC and furnace to work harder and run a higher risk of breaking down)
- Ice dams forming on the roof or snow melting off it too quickly in the winter (these signs both usually mean you don’t have enough attic insulation)
Getting a home assessment is another good way to tell if you need more insulation—and where you need to insulate. At MIG Building Systems, we can conduct a Comprehensive Home Assessment in your house.
