Gutters are one of the most important parts of a roofing system. But they tend to be forgotten until something goes wrong. If you’ve lived in your home for 10 years and have never touched your gutters, or your current ones have been damaged recently, it may be time for replacement.
But what type of gutters should you get? Which gutters are best?
What Are the Best Gutters?
Seamless gutters are continuous—they only have joints at the corners and where the gutters meet downspouts—and most often made from aluminum. But they can also be made of copper or painted steel. Although a bit more costly, seamless gutters are stronger and more reliable than other types of gutters, which are more prone to leaking.
Materials
The most common gutter materials are galvanized steel, aluminum and copper. Copper gutters have a distinct look and a lot of character. They may not be suitable for every home, and some people don’t prefer the look of copper. Aluminum gutters are lighter-weight and more rust-resistant than galvanized steel. No matter the material, a general rule of thumb for gutter systems is that you need one downspout for about every 30 – 40 linear feet of gutter. To increase the capacity of your gutter system, add more downspouts. Many consider aluminum gutters the best.
Protection Systems
Almost as important as properly installed, high-quality gutters is a gutter protection system. There are many leaf screens (gutter guards) available as well as heating products for protection against ice and cold-weather damage. Many of these brands are fantastic, and really, there is no single best gutter guard. That said, our team installs (and highly recommends!) Screen-Mesh Gutter Protection systems, Gutter Helmet® and Helmet Heat®. We think Gutter Helmet® and Helmet Heat® are some of the best gutter protection systems on the market!
