Fiberglass vs. Cellulose

Do you need to re-insulate your home? If you’ve been doing research, you’ve probably read about two popular types of insulation—cellulose and fiberglass. What are the major differences between these two insulation materials?

Fiberglass and cellulose have a few similarities, but they also have their differences. Let’s start with some basic information about both types:

Fiberglass Insulation

Many homeowners think of fiberglass as “the pink insulation.” There’s more to fiberglass than this though—it is available as blown-in or batts and can be used to insulate many areas of a home (attic, walls, etc.). Fiberglass has been used as an insulating material for many decades and is one of the oldest known types of insulation.

Cellulose Insulation

One of the most distinguishing characteristics of cellulose is its environmentally friendliness. Cellulose consists of up to 80 percent recycled material and takes less energy to make than other types of materials, making it one of the greenest types of insulation on the market.

Similarities Between Fiberglass & Cellulose

Both cellulose and fiberglass:

  • Can be used in nearly any area of a home—attic, walls, basement, etc.
  • Are the best types of insulation for soundproofing purposes
  • Have blown-in installation methods

Difference Between Fiberglass & Cellulose

These two types of insulation have a few differences:

  • Cellulose is made of organic material while fiberglass consists of synthetic matter
  • Cellulose and fiberglass have different R-values and weights (learn more)
  • Fiberglass is mainly pink in color, while cellulose tends to be gray

Both insulation materials are great for re-insulation projects. Which one you’ll install depends on where you need to insulate and other factors—the professionals at MIG Building Systems can discuss the details with you at your initial consultation.
