How Much Can Insulation Save?

Do you need to insulate your home? One of the first things you may ask yourself is “How much does insulation save?” Is re-insulating worth it? It’s difficult to determine one exact answer since so many different factors are involved.

While you can use tools on the internet to calculate approximately how much money insulation can help you save, keep in mind that looking online should not substitute talking to insulation professionals!

Figuring Out Insulation Savings for Your Home

The cost and savings of insulation installation depend on a number of different factors, including:

  • Where you need to insulate
  • The size of your home
  • The type of HVAC systems you have
  • And more

Also, you can visit CIMA (Cellulose Insulation Manufacturers Association) online to calculate insulation savings. You can measure the financial impact of increasing your insulation’s performance by entering your data into the insulation calculator—the size of your house, your energy costs, etc. With the calculator, you can see what you would save both this year and in the future.

The Home Energy Saver™ (HES) website has another helpful savings tool. It calculates all your energy bills using your current rates and personal information, such as where you live, the year your home was built and more.

After filling in your data, you’ll get back your current yearly energy costs and how much you can potentially save with upgrades.

You Can Save Even More!

Keep in mind that there are other ways to help you reduce your energy bills and stay comfortable in your home all year round:

  • Talk to insulation professionals: DIY insulation installation isn’t recommended. It’s best to talk to an insulation company to make sure you are using the right material, installing the right amount of insulation and insulating the appropriate areas of your home to gain the most energy savings.
  • Assess your home: Having professionals analyze your home’s energy use and perform an audit (which includes a blower door test, insulation level inspection and more) is the first step towards maximizing energy efficiency.
  • Air seal your home: Air leaks can undermine the performance of insulation, so a home that is insulated but not properly sealed doesn’t do a whole lot to improve energy efficiency.
  • Cut back on energy in other (easy) ways: To supplement the energy savings gained from insulation, ensure your home is efficient in other ways as well. For example, it can help to do things like replace old incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) and change your HVAC equipment’s filters every one – three months.
