As a significant source of heat loss in homes, attics are a good place to start when you need to insulate and maximize overall energy efficiency. But as a homeowner, you probably don’t know much about insulation. What is the best kind of insulation for the attic?
That’s where insulation professionals can help! Although we can take care of the insulation installation, it’s still helpful to know a little bit of information.
There are a couple different attic insulation options.
Radiant Barrier
Radiant barrier insulation is installed in attics, right under the roof, to help keep your home cooler and more comfortable. It does this by helping your home reflect—rather than absorb—radiant heat from the sun. But keep in mind that radiant barrier insulation isn’t the ideal solution for every attic.
Radiant barriers work well in homes located in warm climates, like Florida or Southern California. For homes in cooler, more northern regions, it can be more cost-effective to install thermal insulation.
Fiberglass & Cellulose
Thermal insulation—such as fiberglass and cellulose—is ideal for attics in cooler climates, like here in Upstate New York. Fiberglass has been around for years and years and is widely used for all types of residential construction applications. It can be installed in the attics of new homes and for retrofit (re-insulation) projects. One of the most environmentally friendly types of insulation, cellulose consists of 80 – 85 percent recycled material (mainly newspaper). It is effective for soundproofing purposes and can be installed in many areas of a home, including the attic.
Insulation can be installed in various areas of your attic, such as the floor, knee walls, etc. A MIG Building Systems professional will be able to assess your situation and let you know where you need to insulate. No matter what type of insulation you use, you can be sure you’ll see—and feel—the results.
Installing insulation in the attic can help:
- Reduce your utility bills and boost the energy efficiency of your home
