Tips for Organizing Your Closets

With the holidays right around the corner and the New Year quickly approaching, it may be a little hectic at your house. But once the preparation, parties and traveling are over, things will slow down and you’ll get back to living life like normal. But it may not be as stress-free as you imagined if you can’t seem to stay organized!

A large part of home organization is closet storage. What shape are your closets in?

Since you can close the door and hide the mess, it’s tempting to throw items into your closet with the thought of organizing the space later. But you can easily use closet organization tips to gain control of the situation.

Gut the Closet

For starters, clear out the entire closet of every item. As you pull clothes, jackets and shoes from the space, put them in three piles: “Keep,” “Toss” and “Donate.”

While everything is removed from the closet, take the time to wipe down shelves and vacuum or sweep the floor. With a clean foundation, you have a good starting point for a well-organized closet.

Assess Your Needs and Closet Limitations

If the closet is limited to a rod for hangers and an upper shelf, invest in closet storage organizers to help you get more from the space. Your options include:

  • Hanging shelf unit: Store folded sweaters, shoes and other items to make better use of vertical space.
  • Over-the-door shoe holder: Maximize storage space and make selecting the right pair a breeze.
  • Drawers: Store ties, socks, undergarments or pajamas.
  • Rubbermaid solutions: Fall in love with your closet. Rubbermaid offers everything from storage bins and hamper kits to shoe cubicles and tie and belt organizers. You can even install more Rubbermaid shelves and rails to maximize the closet space.

Store Off-Season Clothes Elsewhere

Make more room in the closet during the summer by packing up sweaters, boots and long pants. In the winter, trade these back in and store shorts, tank tops and flip flops away.

Here’s where Rubbermaid storage bins come in handy again. Airtight storage keeps your clothes from collecting dust so they’re in great shape when you want to wear them again next season!

Take Inventory Every Six Months

The next time you trade out your seasonal clothes, hang every hanger up backwards. When you wear something, turn the hanger around so it’s facing the right way.

In about six months when you rotate your clothes again, take inventory. Anything still hanging on a backward hanger isn’t worth keeping. Think about it—if you didn’t wear it even once this winter, you’re probably not going to wear it next winter either.
